This afternoon we paddled Otter Creek from downtown Vergennes, from the put-in just after the falls to Fort Cassin, at the mouth of Lake Champlain. Without much effort we floated north with the current to our destination in about an hour and a half. I'd say it is about 8 miles. The current wasn't very fast (it is possible to paddle against it for a bit) With an in boat picnic I'd say it would take 3 hours. This section of Otter Creek is not as wild as the section through Cornwall, Vermont, but very enjoyable as there are many other recreational boaters and fisherman out and lots of houses and docs to check out. One of my favorite sites along the way was a painting of a nude bearded man behind a nautical wheel tacked to a boat launch. The lake is a fun destination. We were too worn out to have dinner at the Black Sheep or Eat Good Food in Vergennes as we'd planned, but this will been a great destination another time.
